Description

We believe that most individual debt is illegitimate and unjust. Most of us fall into debt because we are increasingly deprived of the means to acquire the basic necessities of life: education, health care, and housing. Because we are forced to go into debt simply in order to live, we think it is right and moral to resist it.

We also oppose debt because it is an instrument of exploitation and political domination. Debt is used to discipline us, deepen existing inequalities, and reinforce gendered, racial, and other social hierarchies.

From “Principles of Solidarity,” adopted by consensus of the Strike Debt NYC general meeting of January 6, 2013.

Join 221A at Pollyanna 圖書館 Library on Wednesday, January 23 at 6pm for the first session of a ten-part study group hosted by Enda Brophy. This study is convened in anticipation of the Digital/Debt/Empire symposium, to be held between Simon Fraser University Vancouver Campus and 221A in April 2019.

This syllabus is intended to provide an accessible entry to understanding debt as a complex social, political, and economic system entwined with the proliferation of digital communications technologies and the logics of colonialism and empire. Linking education to social action, the Digital/Debt/Empire Study Group aims to build the practical and theoretical foundation for collective debt resistance organizing in Vancouver.

To register and receive access to the reading materials, please complete this online form. All sessions of the study group are open to all and free to attend.
