To conclude the Fall 2017 semester of Pollyanna Sound Archive Prototype 01, Pollyanna Library’s reading room will be adapted as a collective listening and cataloguing infrastructure. For the duration of the installation, a single-channel suite of commissioned sound works by 221A Fellow Yu Su will be projected into the space between 2PM and 6PM. Produced from the sonic material gathered in the semester’s two collaborative Fieldwork sessions, the works collage the distinct sonic densities of Stanley Park and Aberdeen Centre.
Testing Yu Su’s methods of collective listening-research, this installation is as well an experiment in communal cataloguing: library visitors are encouraged to complete an on-site questionnaire that will contribute to how the sounds they hear will be categorized or ‘tagged’ in the library’s permanent collection (Are these sounds wavy or crunchy? Do they make the listener feel anxious or hungry, or both?).
Join Yu Su at Pollyanna Library on the final day of the installation for an end-of-semester conversation and guided listening session.
Pollyanna Sound Archive Prototype 01 is part of Notes on Permanent Education (N.O.P.E. 2017), a collective research program convened by 221A Librarian Vincent Tao. N.O.P.E. 2017 inaugurates the organization’s new fellowship model and its primary support, Pollyanna Library.
