Description

Join us at Pollyanna 圖書館 Library on Tuesday, July 3, for the last of four sessions in the Bread and Roses Study Group.

Hannah Dempsey will start the final session with a conversation on the significance of “Bread and Roses”, a political slogan inspired by a 1912 speech by American socialist, feminist, and labour activist Rose Schneiderman. The aims of the socialist feminist Bread and Roses Collective, formed in Vancouver in 1980, will be also be discussed. Participants will read together excerpts from the “Pan y Rosas International Manifesto” written in 2017.

The session will close with a group singalong of the song Bread and Roses. This final reception will also mark the return of a collection of books from Ali Bischoff’s 2017 project with 221A, Rereading Room: The Vancouver Women’s Bookstore.

For access to study materials please email collections@polly-anna.ca.

Hosted by 221A Collections Librarian Hannah Dempsey, the Bread and Roses Study Group will read documents of revolutionary women’s organizing with histories of the labour movement in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.

Between June and July 2018, 221A will host two study groups: Bread and Rose and Autonomous Education. For access to the full calendar of events, visit polly-anna.ca/activities.
