Join us at Pollyanna 圖書館 Library for readings of The Clay Ladies (2001) written by Michael Bedard, on either July 25 or August 22, 2-3 pm. This children’s book, illustrated by artist Les Tait, is based on the lives and studio-home of Artists Frances Loring (1887–1968) and Florence Wyle (1881–1968). The story is told by a grandmother to her grandchild, who looks back on growing up on the street where Frances and Florence lived in Toronto. As a young person, she finds a wounded bird, and while Florence nurses it back to health over several days, some virtues of the sculptor’s art are revealed.
These readings are hosted by 221A Fellow Amy Nugent, whose research is centred on the Last Will and Testaments of Frances Loring and Florence Wyle. As a way to fulfill their final wishes, her work will develop The Sculpture Fund, the main clause in their mirroring Wills, which calls for the creation of a fund of money to be made available to organizations for the commissioning and acquisition of sculpture. Through her fellowship, Amy has created a research collection for Pollyanna 圖書館 Library, which activates Frances and Florence’s memoirs and archives. The Clay Ladies, is one of the books in this collection.
